After getting Friday’s issue of the newspaper in the can I knew I had a week — more or less — off, so I decided to go in. I went in stocking feet so as not to startle anybody or anything that might be living in there, but that made the terrain all the more dangerous. The dog knew what was coming, and quietly skulked away. Would I find the missing iPod? |

There is a bureau in here! I’m going to take a leap and say that anything 75% inside the drawers is clean. A couple of bags of trash are out in the hall, and I have a shelf out there for the books. There is a tenuous red path of carpet from the sliver of doorway — the door still won’t open more than about 25% — and the bureau. I straighten as best I can and actually get the drawers shut. |

Digging out at a steady clip I quickly fill another trash bag and find two more loads of laundry. All those socks that were missing a mate – I am pretty sure I know where the mates were now. The Denizen of this hell hole takes the four bags of trash down to the trash barrel, and I startle Karen by throwing a load of laundry off the balcony into the room below. It lands with a satisfying THWACK! |

Here’s the thing about teenagers. They sleep a lot. They eat a lot. Then they sleep some more. So even after a two day break for the holiday I can’t say the Denizen of this room was anxious to get back to our little project. She got up around lunchtime, then needed time for breakfast, and to get dressed. Not long after that she asked about lunch. |

I had a dream last night that a large machine glided across the room Zamboni-like, and at the end of its sweep changed the name of the room to something that made it more tidy. I woke up and came to the conclusion that it was just a dream, but then found a much smaller machine, which I could sweep the room with and a new name fell into a tray, declaring it was my daughter's room (the meaning being that the room is clean). Unfortunately I woke up again... |

I've lost track of the days. But I am becoming disheartened by the new laundry and more bags of trash. For two days -- not in a row -- we lost sight of the carpet we had fought so hard to uncover. The other day the Denizen of the Room did a great job on reducing the contents of the toy box from 273.4% full to about 78%. |

Four bags of trash in the hallway, plus the one that went down to the trash barrel (what a concept!). A half dozen loads of laundry have gone down to the basement. Now you can’t walk in the basement (that is our next reality series…). |

Today is Day 5. So far I don’t feel sick, and I am hoping it was just a 24 hour thing because there is so much work yet to do. The Denizen and the dog are still sleeping in there, so I have some calm before the storm resumes. I am still optimistic about finding the iPod. The Denizen says she wants to get one of those beeper-locator gadgets for it once we find it, so it will never be lost again. I actually have some (it saved my marriage when Karen kept inadvertently hiding the TV clicker in our bedroom) and offered to buy batteries for them. |

We have made it to the north wall where the closet is, but the Denizen of the Room, under light supervision yesterday, moved a lot of things to the middle, so it looks like we have made little progress. Or is it that the junk is an amorphous being, nearly sentient, and capable of oozing across the floor on its own?I have discovered a hidden cache of Cheerios, not at all contained by the plastic bag that allegedly once held them. My knee hit something and there was a flash of light — did the Junk Creature take a picture of me? I moved my knee again, but couldn’t get it to do it again. |

With me having to work, it has been up to the Denizen of the Room to clean. That has sometimes meant just moving piles around, but she has also made some tangible progress. The most amazing feat was getting the bureau cleaned off, and she laid it on the floor so I could replace the missing leg. |

The excavation continues, but very slowly now that school is in full swing.
Yesterday we consulted a Magic 8 Ball. It says we will definitely find the iPod. But it was vague about when and positively silent about where... |
